Program Notes: The music of Johann Sebastian Bach represents the culmination of the Baroque Period. His comprehensive knowledge of styles and nationalities of music have allowed his compositions to transcend language, geographical borders, and time. “On the Pillars of Genius” is a two-part concert in which we’ll hear music from some of the composers that Bach studied, performed, and loved.

During his tenure as Kantor at the Thomaskircher – where he wrote his five cantata cycles as well as all of his major vocal works – he purchased two volumes of Renaissance motets known as the Florilegium Portense. In the first half of our concert we’ll hear music from several composers in this collection: Jacob Handl, G. Gabrieli, H. Praetorious, and M. Vulpius. We”ll also hear works by composers not included in the Florilegium Portense but that Bach would have know: Heinrich Schütz, Johann Kuhnau, and Dietrich Buxtehude.

In the second half of the concert we’ll hear from the master himself in his large scale Cantata 147, from which comes the choral setting of “Jesu, joy of man’s desiring.” In between the two halves we’ll have a short reception to celebrate the opening of the 2017-2018 season.
