On Sunday, October 15th, 2017 at 1:00 p.m., the Mallarmé Chamber Players will take children and their families into the world of song writing and singing in its first family concert of the season.
Cellist Shana Tucker and pianist/composer Amy K. Bormet will lead children and families through the song writing process like: Elements of a song (melody, chorus, bridge, etc.) Establishing a Groove (tempo, rhythm) and Storytelling through Song (adding melody to words and vice-versa).
Shana Tucker is a cellist and singer-songwriter who performs all over the US. After a 5-year stint as a Cirque de Soleil performer in the show KA, she is back home in NC! Her style of “ChamberSoul™” music is a pastiche of jazz, classical, soulful folk, acoustic pop and a touch of R&B with a distinctive rhythmic tapestry. A front-line advocate for arts education, Shana has been a teaching artist with United Arts Council of Raleigh/Wake County NC, The Smith Center for Performing Arts – Las Vegas, NV and Southern Nevada Wolf Trap Institute for Early Learning Through the Arts.
As an advocate for women in music, Amy K. Bormet created the Washington Women in Jazz Festival in 2011, and continues to serve as executive director. Her latest project, Ephemera, is a platform for her new art songs with improvisation. In addition to her performance career, Amy is a prolific composer, frequently combining improvisation with concert music. Her recorded music is featured in short films, radio dramas, and audio books.
This first concert of Mallarmé’s Family Concert series will take place on Sunday, October 15th at 1:00 pm at Duke Gardens in Kirby Horton Hall. Sure to be informative and fun, family concerts last one hour and are great for children ages 5 and up, as well as adults! After the concert, join the Electric Violin Shop for a chance to try out string instruments at the instrumental petting zoo.

The Mallarmé Chamber Players are a flexible ensemble of professional musicians based in Durham, North Carolina, whose mission is to enrich the lives of their community through outstanding chamber music. The ensemble distinguishes itself by its innovative educational programs, its commitment to creative collaboration with other organizations, its creation of significant new work, and its dedication to serve a diverse population.
Mallarmé annually presents a series of concerts that features great, diverse, and multidisciplinary chamber music. Mallarmé performs everything from Bach with period instruments to commission and performing brand new works. In 2010, Mallarmé released, to great acclaim, a cd on Albany/Videmus records of chamber music by African American composers.
Mallarmé is unique in that they do not work with a core of musicians, but instead use the musical talent North Carolina has to offer to perform with the ensemble depending on the needs of the repertoire. Most of Mallarmé’s musicians are members of professional organizations like the NC Symphony or are faculty members of the numerous institutions of higher learning.
Mallarmé is a non-profit, tax-exempt, 501(c) 3 organization. The 2017-18 concert season is made possible in part by grants from the Durham Arts Council’s Annual Arts Fund and the North Carolina Arts Council.
