On Sunday, April 3, at 4:00PM pianist Andrew Tyson will present a recital at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, located at 82 Kimberly Drive in the Hope Valley section of Durham. The concert is part of the 2015-2016 season of the St. Stephen’s Concert Series.
As a result of winning the Géza Anda international piano competition in Zürich last summer, Mr. Tyson will have so many European engagements in the next two years that he may get an apartment in Berlin. Even now the countries in which he has concertized include the United States, Canada, Mexico, the UK, France, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, Poland, Portugal, and Croatia. And let’s not forget Azerbajan, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.
Tyson, a Durham native who grew up at St. Stephen’s church, will open his recital with three Scarlatti sonatas, followed by Ravel’s five movement suite Miroirs. Then, after intermission, he will perform a Chopin group (three Mazurkas and the Polonaise-Fantasie) and the piano solo version of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue.
Replacing the usual Pre-Concert Discussion will be showings of a short video made in the Berlin studio where Mr. Tyson recorded Chopin’s Preludes. The video will be shown several times between 3:00 and 3:30 on the afternoon of the concert in the church’s Davis Room.
Tickets ($25) will be available at the door. The concert is free for those 18 or under.
