Classical Voice of North Carolina (CVNC) depends on donors like you for more than 60% of our income. This year, donations are lower than they have been in years. We need you more than ever!
Each month, presenters submit more than 300 events for our calendar. We pay our critics and editors to review fewer than 50 of those. Therefore, more than 250 worthy concerts, plays, dance performances, and art exhibits do not receive our professional reviews that help the presenters hone their craft and draw audiences.
Our Arts Journalism Intern Program for performing and visual arts students is popular and growing across the state. As many arts audiences are graying, CVNC student interns bring their fresh perspectives to our readers and to our writers. Encourage these students through your donations!

Bonnie Thron
Ms. Bonnie Thron joined the North Carolina Symphony as principal cellist in 2000. She currently is a member of the piano quartet Quercus and frequently plays with the Mallarme Chamber Players. In the summers she plays in the Sebago Long Lake Music Festival in Maine.
Previously she was a member of the Peabody Trio, in residence at the Peabody Institute, during which time the group won the Naumberg chamber music competition. Early in her career Ms. Thron was assistant principal cellist of the Denver Symphony for a season and she played and recorded with the Orpheus Chamber Ensemble. She has had a long history with the Apple Hill Chamber Players as a guest artist and chamber music coach and was involved in the group’s first Playing for Peace tour to the Middle East in 1991.
Ms. Thron has performed concertos with the North Carolina Symphony, the Orpheus Chamber Ensemble, the Juilliard Orchestra, the Panama National Orchestra, the Vermont Symphony Orchestra, and various other orchestras in North Carolina and her original home state of New Hampshire. She received Bachelors and Masters degrees from the Juilliard School. Her teachers include Lynn Harrell, Harvey Shapiro, Norman Fischer and Elsa Hilger.
Ms. Thron also received a BSN from Johns Hopkins School of Nursing and worked as a nurse for several years as a nurse at Johns Hopkins Hospital and as a case manager in home care nursing during which time she was a cello teacher at the Baltimore School for the Arts. Ms. Thron and her husband, clarinetist Fred Jacobowitz, have a teenage son – pianist, clarinetist, and computer whiz Louis.
Frank Pittman
Dr. Frank Pittman is a nationally-certified teacher of music who has taught piano at Meredith College since 1998. Dr. Pittman has performed as recitalist, concerto soloist, and chamber musician throughout the United States and in Europe; he has appeared in live broadcast over British Radio. Recently in March 2010, he was honored to adjudicate for Hong Kong Schools Music Competition.
Pittman was the co-facilitator of the Chopin Festival held at Meredith College and performed the complete series of Mozart’s violin sonatas with violinist Carol Chung as part of the Mozart at Meredith celebration. Recently he joined forces with Chung, violist David Marschall, and cellist Bonnie Thron as founding members of the Quercus Quartet.
His teachers have included Robert Morris, Duke Miles, Harvey Wedeen, Lambert Orkis, JosephDi Piazza, and Walter Hautzig.
A frequent lecturer, adjudicator, and master class clinician, he has served on the faculties of the Governor’s School of North Carolina, at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the Actors Center in Philadelphia, Durham School of the Arts; he has also been guest Lecturer of Music Theatre at Temple University. Pittman is a member of music honor fraternity Pi Kappa Lambda, the College Music Society, the American Brahms Society; he has served as president of the NC Music Teachers Association, an affiliate of the Music Teachers National Association.
Dr. Pittman holds the Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, the Master of Music from Temple University, and the Bachelor of Music from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

CVNC is an online journal covering the arts across North Carolina.
Our mission is to inform residents and visitors about the incredibly broad spectrum of arts events throughout our state. Most important for us is the need for our readers to be able to find events that appeal to them.

- ARTICLES (Reviews and Features) to evaluate the past performances or exhibits of an artistic presenter. Our articles are submitted by our own writers, guest artists, educators and specialists.
