On Sunday, April 24, 2016, at 3:00 p.m., Women’s Voices Chorus will present The Womanly Song of God at First Presbyterian Church, 305 East Main Street, Durham.
“I am the God of a thousand names: why cannot one of them be Woman singing?” So asks poet Catherine de Vinck in the title piece of this concert, which features stunning music about powerful women. The first half of the program includes From Behind the Caravan by Abbie Betinis, based on the Persian poetry of Hâfez. The second half presents diverse works about brave women from the three faiths of Abraham: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.
“This music reflects various conceptions about our relationship to God or to various gods,” says Artistic Director Allan Friedman. “A wide range of human emotions are expressed through musical protagonists as they praise, question, or humble themselves before the divine.”
WVC is thrilled to welcome the Women’s Choir of Durham’s Northern High School to the stage for select pieces in this program.
