Our Rossini recap generated more response than our usual fare, so we thought we’d do a list of all the Verdi operas (and yes, deal with the revisions as applicable, too). Even taking into account some substantial reworkings that stand as virtually new works, there are still fewer operas than Rossini composed, so this should be a snap, right?
The classic 1992 biography by Mary Jane Phillips-Matz remains readily available from all the usual sources. Though there are (literally) countless others, in many languages, hers retains its special relevance and importance.
Ricordi‘s critical edition is ongoing; 14 operas plus the Requiem have been completed, as of this writing. Older editions of the scores are readily available from IMSLP.
The format of this listing is the same as before: title with embed to more information including plot summary; the number of acts; the author(s) of the libretto; location and date of the premiere; and a link to a recommended YouTube performance – feel free to search for others, of course. Except as noted, all works are in Italian. Most of the links point to fairly recent videos. There are a few audio-only files. The French version of Trovatore (Trouvère) is an audio recording made in 1912 that is surprisingly listenable, even today.

Discussed but not composed: Re Lear (King Lear), 1856. Librettist Antonio Somma worked with Verdi on completing a libretto for an opera based on Shakespeare’s King Lear. This libretto was based on an incomplete one begun by Salvatore Cammarano before he died in 1852. It was never set to music.
