Half-Tone Folk Heroes: Traditional Musicians as Pop Art featuring illustrations by Gina Dilg will open with a reception from 3 to 4 p.m., Saturday, June 1, at the Blue Ridge Music Center. The works will be on display through October. Dilg is a Radford, Va., based visual artist and musician who brings a unique perspective to traditional American music. She created this exhibit to pay tribute to the old-time, bluegrass, early country, and folk musicians who have inspired generations. Each illustration in the series is characterized by bold black strokes and a bright color palette achieved by layering halftone dots and lines in only cyan, magenta, yellow, and black. Each work is displayed with a brief biography of the featured musician and tells about their contributions to traditional music. From bluegrass legends like the Stanley Brothers and Bill Monroe to lesser-known musicians like Joe and Odell Thompson, Samantha Bumgarner, and Etta Baker, Dilg’s art pays homage to the greats and shines a light on widely celebrated and unsung musical heroes. The Americana Music Association Lifetime Achievement Award-winning Buddy Guy will perform hits from throughout his career, in addition to his 2022 album, The Blues Don’t Lie. At age 87, Buddy Guy is a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee, a major influence on rock titans like Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, and Stevie Ray Vaughan, a pioneer of Chicago’s fabled West Side sound, and a living link to the city’s halcyon days of electric blues. For more than 20 years, Paisley has been one of country music’s most talented and decorated male singer-songwriters, winning numerous awards, including three Grammys, two American Music Awards, 15 Academy of Country Music Awards, and 14 Country Music Association Awards, including an Entertainer of the Year honor. A member of the Grand Ole Opry since 2001, the Glen Dale, West Virginia native has written 21 of his 25 No. 1 hits, his past works amassing nearly five billion streams. The international tour — which visits some of the most jaw-dropping places on Earth, including Iceland, Switzerland, Norway, Ireland, Scotland, and Boone — is named after his latest album, Son of the Mountains. Last fall, Paisley released Son of the Mountains: The First Four Tracks, which includes the previously released songs “Same Here,” featuring Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and “So Many Summers,” plus the newly released title track “Son of the Mountains” and “The Medicine Will.” The full-length studio album is anticipated for release this year.
