Mysterium will be an adventure for all the senses, transforming the spaces of Kaleideum into a multi-sensory playground of music, taste, and interactive experiences. Rising to fame as the lead vocalist and primary lyricist of the folk-rock band 10,000 Maniacs (In My Tribe, Blind Man’s Zoo), Merchant’s success grew even more as a solo artist, cementing her place in the pantheon of literate, socially conscious songs (Tigerlily, Ophelia). All ages will enjoy pieces like Mendelssohn's Reformation Symphony, written in honor of the 300th anniversary of the Augsburg Confession, Crown Imperial, written for the coronation of King George VI in 1937 and used later at the coronations of Queen Elizabeth II and King Charles III, Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, written for World War II troops, and Liberty Fanfare by John Williams, commissioned to celebrate the Centennial of the Statue of Liberty in 1986. We will once again feature our amazing RCO vocalists.

Durham Symphony Orchestra: Compositions by Her, A Concert Celebrating Women in Music

The concert will feature works by two outstanding American composers, Libby Larsen and Florence Price. Larsen’s song cycle Sonnets from the Portuguese is based on the poetry of Elizabeth Barrett Browning. Our performance will feature the return to Hayti of acclaimed soprano soloist LaToya Lain, renowned (among other things) for her performance in the opera Sanctuary Road. The Violin Concerto No. 2 by trail-blazing African American composer Florence Price will be performed in its entirety by gifted young American violinist Holly Nelson.   We will also pay homage to iconic female characters evoked by the music of Georges Bizet.  The program will include instrumental pieces and “Micaela’s Aria” from Carmen (with soprano LaToya Lain). It will also include a salute to that opera’s unconventional heroine and selections from Bizet’s incidental music to the play L’ Arlésienne (“The Girl from Arles”).
