Mimi Stillman, the internationally acclaimed flautist, will once again grace a Triangle stage, performing music from Mozart to Zhou Tian, while The Chamber Orchestra adorns the concert with orchestral fireworks. First performed to great acclaim at The Curtis Institute chamber concert series in Philadelphia, Zhou’s “Viaje (journey) for flute and string quartet” composed for Ms. Stillman, has been expanded into a full orchestra composition for this World Premier performance by The COT. The brilliant young (born in 1981) Chinese-American composer’s music has been heralded as “magical”, “mesmerizing”, “a masterpiece”, “absolutely beautiful” and “utterly satisfying”. Zhou’s prizes and commissions are legion, including a major commission “The Grand Canal” performed live on television for the 60th Anniversary Celebration of the founding of the People’s Republic of China and was the theme music for the 2010 Shanghai World Expo.
Stillman first achieved renown in The Triangle with a performance of a Mozart Flute Concerto at the age of 18, performing as part of The Charles and Shirley Weiss Young Endowed Concerts with the COT. She had just graduated with her first degree from The Curtis Institute and had just become the youngest wind player in history to win The Young Concert Artists International Audition. At 12 she was the youngest wind player ever admitted to Curtis. This concert will again dazzle with Mozart’s “Flute Concerto No. 2 in D major, K.314” as well as the Viaje, music spanning 250 years.
Also on the program is Maestro Muti bringing to life Mozart’s “Overture to Don Giovanni” and the beloved ” Czech Suite, op. 39″ of Antonin Dvorak. The entire suite will be performed, one of the great orchestral feasts of the 19th century. C
As an added treat, the concert will open with Mascagni’s ” Intermezzo from Cavalleria Rusticana”, a lively delight conducted by Dr. Shaun Matthews, winner of the COT Gala conducting auction, an annual fundraiser for the orchestra. Dr. Matthews, born in Barbados, was recruited to UNC Global as a clinical associate professor in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, recruited from the Famous King’s College Hospital, London, England. He has become immensely popular due to his ebullient personality, so having him join the orchestra promises a delightful time for the orchestra and the audience.
