In an exciting last minute audible, the Greensboro Symphony announces a thrilling program change for its upcoming Masterworks concerts. Though still featuring Greensboro’s own Kelly Burke on clarinet, the February 27th and March 1st concerts will now include three of Russia’s hottest young soloists: The Hermitage Piano Trio. Symphony-goers will remember cellist Sergey Antonov from his acclaimed 2012 performance with the GSO—and this time, world-renowned violinist Misha Keylin and “flawless” pianist Ilya Kazantsev will join them on Beethoven’s daunting Triple Concerto.
The Beethoven Triple Concerto is one of the more unique offerings in the composer’s repertoire, being the first symphonic work ever to feature three instrumental soloists. The reason for Beethoven’s decision is unknown—whether he hoped to make an impression upon a particular audience or hide a weaker soloist, the concerto has remained in the standard repertoire for centuries, dazzling audiences with florid lines of considerable demand for all instruments.
In addition to the Beethoven concerto, Kelly Burke, principal clarinetist of the GSO and Interim Associate Dean of the UNCG School of Music, Theatre and Dance, will remain as a soloist on the program, playing Weber’s lush Fantasia and Rondo for Clarinet & Orchestra. Finally, the GSO will close with one of the most stunningly beautiful pieces in the symphonic repertoire—Rachmaninoff Symphony #2.
While swapping soloists and revamping repertoire just weeks before a show can be a monumental challenge, Lisa Crawford, President & CEO of the Greensboro Symphony, feels that the GSO has been very fortunate in this turn of events. “The Hermitage Trio features three very talented and dynamic young soloists—we are thrilled to be bringing them to Greensboro for such an exciting new program,” she said.
