Music for a Great Space and the Classical Music Across Cultures Project, in cooperation with ArtsGreensboro will present The Lorena Guillén Tango Ensemble in concert, featuring the premiere a new composition based upon the real stories of NC Latino women.
For the second consecutive year, Music for a Great Space and the Classical Music Across Cultures Project have teamed up to present a chamber music concert and three-day educational residency in Guilford County Schools during ArtsGreensboro’s 17 Days Festival. On Friday, October 3 at 7:30pm, The Lorena Guillén Tango Ensemble will give a concert at Christ United Methodist Church, featuring the premiere of a new composition, entitled “The Other Part of My Heart,” written by two members of the ensemble.
Lorena Guillén, vocalist and artistic said “this composition is a musical piece based on the real stories of a group of fantastic Latino women that immigrated to the Triad. Over various sessions of conversations with me, they generously shared and reflected about their trajectory from their home countries to their new place in United States. Between laughs and tears, they bravely told me about their dreams and fears, the things that they lost and the ones they gained.
“In this musical piece, bits of those recorded interviews are inserted in an artistic collage around the composition by Alejandro Rutty and myself made for voice, violin, piano, electric-bass and percussion. Their stories become a cycle of five songs interlaced by their narrations.”
In addition to this concert, the ensemble will visit four to five Guilford County Schools, teaching 800 to 1,000 students. They will also present one additional free concert geared for elementary through middle aged students on Friday morning, October 3, at Christ United Methodist Church, open to any school, community group, or curious individual.
Dr. Rebecca Libera, Music for a Great Space Executive Director says, “These educational programs and concerts are the heart of what MGS and CMAC do – providing high-quality, diverse, entertaining, educational, and engaging musical experiences for music lovers of all ages.”
“We hope this project will bring together diverse people groups and cultures, influence children’s futures and much more,” says Marta Richardson, Guilford County violin teacher and CMAC Project Coordinator. “We want to help overcome the cultural stereotype of the classical musician by giving our students role models that will inspire, motivate and captivate them.”
Two other arts non-profits will assist in the presentation of the Friday night concert. The creative team of Casa Azul will be providing visual enrichment for the performance, while The Greensboro Oratorio Singers are providing a reception and opportunity for the concert attendees to meet and interact with the artists. “We are so grateful to The Greensboro Oratorio Singers and Casa Azul for their contributions,” says Libera. “With their help, this concert will be a stimulating and truly memorable experience.”
