The North Carolina Symphony will perform Fantasia, Disney’s groundbreaking marriage of symphonic music and animation in four concerts in Meymandi Concert Hall in downtown Raleigh Thursday, May 15 at 7:30 p.m., Friday, May 16, at 8 p.m., and Saturday, May 17, at 3 p.m. and again at 8 p.m. Repertoire from the original 1940 version and Fantasia 2000, including The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony and the Nutcracker Suite, will be performed while Disney’s stunning footage is shown on the big screen.
The concerts, which will be led by guest conductor Ron Spigelman, are the finale of the Symphony’s 2013/14 Pops season. A native of Australia, Spigelman is an honors graduate of the Royal Academy of Music, London, and is currently Music Director of the Lake Placid Sinfonietta. He has accompanied a wide range of renowned artists including Horacio Gutierrez, Richard Stoltzman, Sharon Isbin, Jubilant Sykes, Jon Kimura Parker, Orli Shaham and many others. Pops artists he has performed with include Marvin Hamlisch, Canadian Brass, King’s Singers and legends James Taylor, Art Garfunkel and Peter Paul and Mary.
