North Carolina Opera will present a Wagner concert January 27 in the Meymandi Concert Hall at the Duke Energy Center (formerly Progress Energy Center) in Raleigh. Jay Hunter Morris, who performed the famously difficult role of Siegfried with the Metropolitan Opera, Elizabeth Bishop, and Peter Volpe will star, and Timothy Myers, Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of North Carolina Opera, will conduct. Hear the complete Act I of Die Walküre, along with selections from Die Meistersinger, Tristan und Isolde, and the Flying Dutchman. The concert will be sung in German with English supertitles. Wagner fans are coming from far and wide to hear this first ever Raleigh performance of any part of Wagner’s epic Ring cycle.
Richard Wagner’s Die Walküre begins with an intense musical storm that hounds the warrior Siegmund into an uncertain refuge. Soon, he draws a fabled sword from an ash tree, setting into motion one of the truly unforgettable stories in opera. Rarely seen outside of major cities such as New York and usually brought to Raleigh only in Metropolitan Opera broadcasts, the entire first act of the second opera in Wagner’s epic cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen will be North Carolina Opera’s most distinguished event of the 2012/13 season. In Die Walküre, as well as excerpts from favorites such as Tristan und Isolde, Wagner’s unrivalled imagination meets an 80-piece orchestra and our spectacular singers.
