Over the course of its 23-year history, the performing arts and arts education non-profit Music for a Great Space (MGS) has presented concerts throughout Greensboro. The series began with organ recitals on the C.B. Fisk organ at Christ United Methodist Church, and MGS has since coordinated chamber music recitals at UNCG, Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, Guilford College, Temple Emanuel, Greensboro College, and many other venues. This January 17 , St. Pius the Tenth Catholic Church, at 2210 N. Elm Street, will be added to the list of “great spaces” for the performing arts in the Triad.
MGS Executive Director, and St. Pius X parishioner, Dr. Rebecca Libera has been planning this concert for a year and a half. “One of the great things about MGS is that we bring the finest musicians in the world to the most acoustically wonderful venues in the city. I have always loved singing and listening to music at St. Pius X, and I know our patrons from all over the Triad will enjoy coming to the church.”
“We are so pleased to be able to host a concert from the Music for a Great Space series at our church,” adds Tracy Welliver, Pastoral Associate at St. Pius X. “When our new church was dedicated in just 2010 it was clear that this sacred space would be a great environment for the arts. The Roman Catholic Church has always been such a strong supporter of art and artists throughout the centuries. Here in Greensboro, in a very visible place on North Elm Street, we are happy to continue this tradition with a concert by the fine musicians of the Relevents Wind Quintet.”
Performing will be the Relevents Wind Quintet. Relevents is the Faculty Ensemble in Residence at High Point University. Their program will feature works by Samuel Barber, Joseph Gregorio, Andrey Rubstov, and Miguel del Aguila. The Quintet, consisting of Laura Stevens (flute), Thomas Pappas (oboe), Shawn Copeland (clarinet), Mark Hekman (bassoon), and Mary Boudreault (horn), was founded in 2008 and made their international debut on a tour of southern Germany in March 2009. Dedicated performers and teachers, the individual members are all on the faculty of High Point University, maintain active teaching appointments with other local universities, and keep extensive performance schedules with symphonies throughout North Carolina and the southeast.
Tickets for the concert will be available at the door and in advance at www.musicforagreatspace.org or through the Carolina Theatre Box Office at (336) 333-2605. Adults $18, seniors $15, student $5. Each ticket holder may bring two young people age 16 and under for free. Season tickets and flex passes are also available. Free babysitting is available for this event.
