IMPOSTER: The Dancing Body is an exploration of identity and community through dance. In this piece Van Buren uses both the histories and performance power of three dance genres – hip hop, ballet, and Latin dance – to support personal narratives relating to her feelings of self doubt – “imposter syndrome.” These personal narratives exist both inside and outside of her own dance experience. She interweaves dance, monologues, and other storytelling devices to capture the complex, multi-faceted, intersectional nature of her individual experience.
