Week Four of Eastern Music Festival’s five-week season is brimming with splendid performances by the Festival’s 234 talented Young Artists and internationally acclaimed Faculty Artists and guest musicians.
The Festival, which is known as one of North Carolina’s Musical Treasures and is in its 56th season, began June 24 and continues through July 29.
Be sure to see The Mile-End Trio, with violinist Jeffrey Multer, cellist Julian Schwarz and pianist Marika Bournaki as they take the stage at Guilford College’s Dana Auditorium Wednesday, July 19, at 8 p.m. for what is guaranteed to be a stellar performance. Each of these artists brings high acclaims and achievements to the stage.
The Festival’s Young Artists Orchestra performs the evenings of Thursday, July 20 and Friday, July 21, under the baton of Maestros Grant Cooper (West Virginia Symphony) and José Luis Novo (Annapolis Symphony) respectively. Performing as soloists with the Young Artist Orchestras this week are Leonid Finkelstehyn (double bass) on Thursday, and Jason Vieaux (guitar) on Friday. These performances also are held at Dana Auditorium, beginning at 8 p.m. each night.
EMF’s Saturday performance, A Hero’s Life, features movements from Manuel de Falla’s Three-Cornered Hat, a world premiere of Samuel Jones’ Violin Concerto, and Richard Strauss’ Ein Heldenleben, op. 40 (A Hero’s Life). Violinist Anne Akiko Meyers joins the Eastern Festival Orchestra for Jones’ violin concerto. Meyers is celebrated around the world for her artistry and ability to connect with audiences, and regularly performs in recital and as a guest soloist with many of the world’s top orchestras. As with all Saturday night performances EMF’s Maestro Gerard Schwarz leads the Eastern Festival Orchestra.
On Sunday, July 23, EMF’s Open House includes an afternoon full of free performances from the Young Artists who are studying with the Festival this summer. Beginning at 1 p.m., this free event features the percussion ensemble, a guitar recital, EMF’s piano tradition “Pianopalooza,” and the Eastern Festival Orchestra’s Conducting Fellows Showcase.
Plan to stay for Music for a Sunday Evening in the Park (MUSEP) on Guilford College’s Founder’s Lawn at 6 p.m. This is a great opportunity to experience the emerging talent that is being honed at EMF throughout our 2017 season!
