The Mallarmé Chamber Players are proud to announce the line-up for the 2014 NC HIP Music Festival. HIP stands for Historically Informed Performance, and the entire festival will be performed on Renaissance and baroque period instruments with historical performance
practices. The festival will run from January 21 through February 7, 2014, in various venues in Chapel Hill, Durham and Raleigh and will feature performances by local and international ensembles. Additionally, there will be a day-long recorder playing workshop, an open rehearsal and a panel discussion. The HIP Festival is a large-scale collaboration of 12 organizations, managed by Mallarmé, which has taken on the responsibility of festival organization and marketing while each ensemble is responsible for their own artistic and fiscal management.
Those wanting to attend more than 3 events may want to consider purchasing a HIPSTER pass, which gives admission to all events, including as an auditor to the recorder workshop on February 1. A HIPSTER pass costs $100 and will save at least 50% on the cost of purchasing single tickets for each event. Each ensemble will receive a percentage of the HIPSTER income.
WHAT IS HIP?
North Carolina is fortunate to be home to a wealth of talent of musicians who perform on period instruments. After several years of successful Historical Bach concerts, Mallarmé’s Artistic Director Suzanne Rousso started discussing the possibility of coming together to collaborate on a festival with musicians who performed in these concerts. The group, cellists Brent Wissick (UNC-CH), Stephanie Vial (The Vivaldi Project) and Barbara Krumdieck (Ensemble Vermillian) and harpsichordists Elaine Funaro (Aliénor) and Beverly Biggs (Baroque & Beyond), hoped to develop a festival of music on period instruments with historically informed practices. With great enthusiasm the North Carolina HIP Music Festival was born! The 2013 festival was such a success that for 2014 the number of events and great musicians has more than doubled, including internationally renowned ensembles like the Hilliard Ensemble and the English Concert. We also welcome several new local groups including Armonia Celeste, Duke Vespers Ensemble, Raleigh Camerata, Triangle Recorder Society and Voices of a New Renaissance, as well as presenters Carolina Performing Arts and Duke Performances.
OUR COLLECTIVE DESIRED OUTCOMES ARE THREE-FOLD:
- To collaborate with like-minded organizations to bring together our respective audiences while increasing awareness, interest and support for early music in the Triangle.
- To offer a unique musical experience to audiences by presenting a series of dynamic, historically informed performances at a high artistic level.
- To strengthen our relationships with schools and the community by offering memorable learning opportunities that blend music and history.
As a part of the HIP Festival, Mallarmé will be presenting their own concert on Sunday, February 2, at 3:00 pm. Mallarmé will perform the Brandenburg Concerto No. 2 in F major, BWV 1047, and has commissioned Stephen Jaffe, Duke University professor and member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, to write a contemporary work for period instruments. This work, the HIP Concerto, is based on the same instrumentation of the Brandenburg No. 2. Dr. Jaffe says about the commission: “I’m excited to be working with the HIP players on a new concerto, the third in a recent series of Chamber Concertos—which means the group as a whole is featured. Here I was stirred to bring together the soaring clarino (baroque trumpet) with the vivacious accents of the string ensemble, and to weave the nuanced singing of baroque oboe and recorder with the harpsichord—which presides, like a spirit, over the whole. The HIP Concerto is a lively, festive work pulsing with rhythmic energy and the improbable joy of dancing antiquities.”

The Mallarmé Chamber Players are a flexible ensemble of professional musicians based in Durham, North Carolina, whose mission is to enrich the lives of their community through outstanding chamber music. Mallarmé annually presents a series of five concerts that features great, diverse, and multidisciplinary chamber music.
