Crossroads @ SECCA: Anjimile Headlines

Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art (SECCA) 750 Marguerite Drive, Winston-Salem, NC, United States

Anjimile will arrive at SECCA on the heels of performances at Canada's POP Montreal festival and Pitchfork Music Festival Paris. The artist's much-anticipated new album The King, out today via 4AD, follows up the acclaimed Giver Taker (2020), deemed one of the best 50 albums of the year by Rolling Stone. Nearly every sound heard on The King comes from two instruments: an acoustic guitar and Anjimile’s own voice. Other than a few beautiful contributions from Justine Bowe, Brad Allen Williams, Sam Gendel, and James Krivchenia (Big Thief), the album is the result of a year in LA working intimately with Grammy and Juno winner Shawn Everett.

Art/Money/Beauty/Truth Book Discussion :”The Adult” by Bronwyn Fischer

Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art (SECCA) 750 Marguerite Drive, Winston-Salem, NC, United States

Concluding the series on Thursday, November 30 is a discussion of The Adult by Bronwyn Fischer, in which a new college student struggles to discover who she is and what she wants. Award-winning writer Kate Cayley writes, "This novel is that rare thing that combines profound feeling with the cool detachment and sharp insight of deep intelligence. A coming of age story, a school story, a coming out story, a morally dubious love story and a comic tragedy of modern manners, distractions and disastrous miscalculations, The Adult looks at moving to the city, finding love, finding sex, thinking you are older than you are, watching idiosyncratic videos on YouTube while having your heart broken, and getting out of your depth."

The Threads We Follow

Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art (SECCA) 750 Marguerite Drive, Winston-Salem, NC, United States

The Threads We Follow acknowledges the foundations of fiber arts rooted in explicit gender and cultural expression while demonstrating contemporary understandings of the malleability of identity. The artists throughout this show experiment with structure and form to translate their experiences to materials like thread, fabric, and even hair, creating nontraditional designs including busts, sculptures, and suspended pieces. Ultimately, each of these artists emphasizes the exploratory nature of fiber arts that has continuously allowed space for community-focused experimentation and reflection.

Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art (SECCA) 750 Marguerite Drive, Winston-Salem, NC, United States

If These Walls Could Talk, an exhibition of site-specific mural installations by William Downs, Neka King, and Raj Bunnag.  For centuries, murals served as visual representations of complex social and political commentary in accessible spaces. Creatives placed their work on public structures, in civic centers, among other prominent areas, to communicate relevant critiques of everyday life. This documentation of contemporary issues connected individual experiences across race, gender, and religion, providing a tangible record of shared existence.
