Black Mountain College Museum and Arts Center: Sō Percussion: We Are All Going in Different Directions: A Celebration of John Cage

Black Mountain College Museum and Arts Center (BMCM+AC) 120 College St., Asheville, NC, United States

We Are All Going in Different Directions: A Celebration of John Cage will feature music by John Cage,  Dan Deacon, Matmos, Pauline Oliveros, Claire Rousay, Caroline Shaw, Jason Treuting, and Pamela Z.  For twenty years and counting, Sō Percussion has redefined chamber music for the 21st century through an “exhilarating blend of precision and anarchy, rigor and bedlam” (The New Yorker). They are celebrated by audiences and presenters for a dazzling range of work: for live performances in which “telepathic powers of communication” (The New York Times) bring to life the vibrant percussion repertoire; for an extravagant array of collaborations in classical music, pop, indie rock, dance, and theater; and for their work in education and community, creating opportunities and platforms for music and artists that explore the immense possibility of art in our time.

Film Screening: Max Roach: The Drum Also Waltzes

Black Mountain College Museum and Arts Center (BMCM+AC) 120 College St., Asheville, NC, United States

Experience the groundbreaking sounds of bebop pioneer, virtuoso percussionist and bandleader Max Roach. Roach’s far-reaching ambitions were inspired and challenged by the inequities of the society around him. His political consciousness, expressed in his groundbreaking Freedom Suite and other works, made him a fierce advocate for change at a time when the nation was steeped in racism.

Prior to the screening, filmmaker Ben Shapiro will join us for a pre-film talk.

Setting with Nathan Bowles, Jaime Fennelly, and Joe Westerlund / Sally Anne Morgan

Black Mountain College Museum and Arts Center (BMCM+AC) 120 College St., Asheville, NC, United States

The acoustic-electric hybrid folk trio Setting comprises Nathan Bowles (solo/trio, Pelt, Black Twig Pickers) on strings, keys, and percussion; Jaime Fennelly (Mind Over Mirrors, Peeesseye) on harmoniums, synthesizers, and piano zither; and Joe Westerlund (solo, Califone, Sylvan Esso, Jake Xerxes Fussell) on drums, percussion, and metallophones. Their debut album “Shone a Rainbow Light On” on Paradise of Bachelors traverses textural, phosphorescent topography with a certified organic folk-engine. Fueled by a vibratory hybrid of acoustic and electronic instrumentation, the four stately longform pieces sound like a UFO slowly sinking into a peat bog.

Lecture and Film Screening: Oskar Schlemmer’s Bauhaus Dances with Debra McCall

Black Mountain College Museum and Arts Center (BMCM+AC) 120 College St., Asheville, NC, United States

As Master of the Theater Workshop at the Dessau Bauhaus in the 1920s, Oskar Schlemmer delivered a series of avant-garde lecture dances on the body in space, his lifelong opus. Schlemmer’s revolutionary ideas for a humanistic theater in the new technology age were transported to the US  with the arrival of Bauhauslers Josef and Anni Albers and Xanti Schawinsky, a Theater Workshop performer, to Black Mountain. Their ideas impacted the work of Robert Rauschenberg, John Cage, and Merce Cunningham at Black Mountain, who in turn disseminated Schlemmer’s emphasis on  pedestrian movement and “chance composition” to shape work of the Judson Dance Theater and New York’s downtown performance scene.
