Michael Philip Mossman has been active on the international scene since the age of 17. He has recorded with his own groups and with a virtual "who's who" of the music industry. Michael was nominated for a 2013 Grammy Award for "Best Instrumental Arrangement" for his "Afro-Latin Ellington Suite". Michael has composed and arranged music for the films "Bossa Nova" and "Chico and Rita", which was nominated for an Academy Award in 2012. His ballet "Beneath the Mask" was performed by Jon Faddis and the Chicago Jazz Orchestra with the Deeply Rooted Dance Company. His ballet, La Cova do Rey Cintolo was premiered in 2010 in Mondoñedo, Spain. He has conducted the Bilbao Symphonic Orchestra in Spain, and has composed and arranged scores for the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Louisiana Philharmonic, the Tri-Cities Symphony, Joe Henderson's Grammy winning Big Band album, the Carnegie Hall Jazz Orchestra, the Count Basie Orchestra, The Charles Mingus Orchestra, Tito Puente, Mario Bauza, Slide Hampton and the Jazz Masters Orchestra, the WDR, HR and NDR radio orchestras in Germany and Ray Barretto's New World Spirit. The Duke Music community is excited to celebrate Duke’s Centennial and the 50th Anniversary of Biddle with a special collaborative performance during Family Weekend. Join us on October 19 at 7:00 PM for an evening featuring the remarkable talents of our diverse student body in ensembles. Tickets are required and can be obtained at tickets.duke.edu. The concert will open with J.S. Bach’s BWV 191, movement 1, performed by the Duke Chorale and chamber musicians. Following this, the Duke Wind Symphony and Duke Opera Theater will present selections from opera. Additionally, Aaron Copland’s The Promise of Living and Eric Whitacre’s Sleep will be performed by the Duke Wind Symphony in collaboration with the Duke Chorale. In the second half of the program, the Duke Symphony Orchestra will present Stephen Jaffe’s Cut Time. The evening will conclude with Ludwig van Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy, featuring pianist Ieva Jokubavichiute and vocal soloists Abigail Pickens, Faye Hardek, Lauren Strauch, Korland Simmons (alumnus), and Ted Federle (faculty), along with the Duke Chorale and Duke Symphony Orchestra. The Duke University Chorale presents a diverse selection of works celebrating the Universal Desire for Freedom, featuring music from South Africa, the Baltics, America, and beyond.
Saxophone faculty Susan Fancher, joined by pianist Ināra Zandmane and the Red Clay Saxophone Quartet, presents an exhilarating concert showcasing four brand new compositions. The program includes music by Mark Engebretson, Jennifer Higdon, Harriet Steinke, and Duke Music faculty members John Supko and Andrew Waggoner.
The Duke Chinese Ensemble, conducted by Jennifer Chang, will present a concert that features a variety of Chinese musical genres, including classical, folk, and orchestral pieces, played on a mix of Eastern and Western instruments. For this concert, the Chinese Ensemble is honored to have guest artists Li Qi, a traditional Chinese Pingtan performer and Ni Yuan, an erhu soloist. Li, Qi is a professional pingtan opera performer from Suzhou, China. Li, Qi took an interest in performance art from a young age and was awarded the Suzhou TV program's "Outstanding Singer Award" during elementary school. Subsequently she attended the renowned Pingtan School in Suzhou. After graduation, she was admitted to the Suzhou Pingtan Troupe, performed all over the country, and participated in large-scale CCTV festival performances many times. P.S. Pingtan is a unique performing tradition that originated over 400 years ago in Southeastern China, and involves stringed instruments, singing, and humorous storytelling as a duet. Yuan Ni, an accomplished Erhu soloist, has been dedicated to her musician's life since birth. She earned a BA in Erhu Performance from Wuhan Conservatory of Music. "Shining Night, O Night of Love” A collaboration between the Duke Wind Symphony and the Duke Opera Theater. Selections from Carmen, The Magic Flute, The Marriage of Figaro, Tales of Hoffman, and others. The Duke University Wind Symphony, directed by Verena Mösenbichler-Bryant, is composed largely of non-majors (both undergraduate and graduate) who wish to challenge themselves by performing the finest wind and percussion literature at a highlevel of artistry. Duke Opera Theater presents staged chamber operas, operatic scenes and concerts across the Duke Campus. Many Opera Theater alumni have gone on to pursue careers in music, teaching and performing in the U.S. and around the world.

Chamber Music at Duke, directed by Cellist Caroline Stinson, is a vibrant program of ca. 20 groups and 75 students spanning from Duets to Octets and open to all instruments. Groups are coached by the Ciompi Quartet, pianist Ieva Jokubaviciute, saxophonist Susan Fancher, and Faculty in Strings, Winds and Piano.
Performances given by the Duke University String School Intermediate String Orchestra, Concert String Orchestra, and Youth Symphony Chamber Orchestra. Conductors include, Matt Stutzman, Rob Rempher, and Harry Davidson, conductor of the Duke Symphony Orchestra. Livestream available. "The Duke String School" is directed by Erica Shirts. Violin and Cello Choirs are conducted by Carlos Bardales, Erica Leavell, Nonoko Okada, and Erica Shirts. The Duke University String School was founded by Dorothy Kitchen and a member of the Ciompi Quartet, Arlene di Cecco, in 1967, and has been part of Duke ever since. DUSS serves area students in grades K-12, teaching the violin, viola, cello, and bass through private lessons, chamber music groups, and orchestras at a variety of levels.

The 55-voice Duke Chorale, directed by Allan Friedman, presents holiday music from around the world on themes of life, peace, and light. The Chorale will be joined by choirs from the Durham School of the Arts conducted by Jeremy Nabors. Concert preceded at 6:30 with music on the Duke Chapel carillon and organs. This family holiday event is a long-standing tradition for many area residents.
