Triad Cultural Arts: 25th Annual Juneteenth Celebration

 Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans and honors the invaluable contributions of African Americans to our society. The theme for this year’s celebration is African Americans and the Arts. The 25th anniversary of the local Juneteenth Festival will be commemorated by honoring storyteller, Patricia “Mardia” Stepney for her visionary role in initiating the idea of holding a local Juneteenth Celebration. Biotech Place will be open from 1 to 5 p.m. and will include gospel music, merchandise vendors, community displays, health discussions and a sponsor meet and greet. Additionally, a culturally affirming Arts and Literacy Village will include creative activities Black author read-a-louds, games and crafts. 10,000 attendees are expected. Bailey Park events will run from 1 to 8 p.m. and will include R&B and jazz music, African dance, youth performances, merchandise vendors, a Food Lion local produce stand and more! Kid’s Kingdom will be available from 1-5 p.m. and will include games, tribal dot face painting, crafts, make-n-takes and more.

“To Take Shape and Meaning” Community Day

This exhibition features 3-D works by seventy-five contemporary Indigenous artists from throughout the United States and Canada, including eight from North Carolina. Form and design are two of the oldest elements in American Indian art. Artists use these to create culturally unique characteristics that convey meaning and function in ceramics, weaving, beadwork, and basketry. Tickets go on sale Thursday, February 8, at 10 am for members and Thursday, February 22, at 10 am for nonmembers. Free for Members. $20 Adults, $17 Seniors age 65 and older, $14 Youth ages 7–18, Free for children 6 and under and college students. Join competition juror and sculptor Christopher Meyer on a fascinating outdoor tour of the 10 contemporary American sculptures selected as finalists for this year’s annual competition. With a rich background in iron work, Meyer’s work ranges from non-objective to representational sculptural objects, sculptural installations, and cast-iron performance work, often focusing on the interaction between the viewer and the work. The walking tour will culminate at the Schaefer Center with an awards reception and complimentary boxed lunch.
