The Raleigh Flute Choir: Musical Portraits

The Raleigh Flute Choir is pleased to announce its fall program, Musical Portraits. This concert will present a selection of movements from Sigfrid Karg-Elert’s 33 Portraits for Harmonium, arranged for flute choir by our own Thiago Bottega. Karg-Elert wrote each movement of this work in the manner of a different influential composer, leading to a fascinating look at the unique characteristics that define these artists’ styles. Founded in 1986, the Raleigh Flute Choir is one of the nation’s leading professional flute choirs. Performing regularly throughout North Carolina, the ensemble has also played at the White House and inChicago, Orlando, Charleston, and Williamsburg. Their varied repertoire ranges from arrangements of familiar orchestral pieces to world premieres of contemporary flute choir literature. The Raleigh Flute Choir has recorded four albums, with the most recent one, Kaleidoscope, available for download on Apple Music. Admission:  Donations Accepted

The Cuarteto Casals from Spain, with its distinctive tonal balance and interpretive brilliance, is one of the finest string quartets in the world. Founded 25 years ago, they have received first prizes at the International String Quartet Competition in London and the International Johannes Brahms Competition in Hamburg. Four Seasons Music Festival presents “Combinations”

Join Four Seasons as three unique combinations of musicians take the stage to perform works by W.A. Mozart, Sergei Prokofiev, and Dmitri Shostakovich. Clarinetist Alan Kay, violinists Yura Lee and Jesse Mills, violist Ara Gregorian, and cellist Peter Stumpf join forces for Mozart’s iconic Clarinet Quintet, while the strings unite with pianist Ieva Jokubaviciute for Shostakovich’s fierce Piano Quintet. The Euclid Quartet enjoys one of the most highly regarded reputations of any chamber ensemble of its generation. Formed in 1998, it won top prizes at the Osaka, Hugo Kauder, Carmel, and Chamber Music Yellow Springs competitions. In 2009, the Euclid Quartet was awarded the “American Masterpieces” grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. “Rarely has a group found such meaning and vision” (American Record Guide). Duke University Department of Music: Chinese Music

The Duke Chinese Ensemble, conducted by Jennifer Chang, will present a concert that features a variety of Chinese musical genres, including classical, folk, and orchestral pieces, played on a mix of Eastern and Western instruments. For this concert, the Chinese Ensemble is honored to have guest artists Li Qi, a traditional Chinese Pingtan performer and Ni Yuan, an erhu soloist. Li, Qi is a professional pingtan opera performer from Suzhou, China. Li, Qi took an interest in performance art from a young age and was awarded the Suzhou TV program's "Outstanding Singer Award" during elementary school. Subsequently she attended the renowned Pingtan School in Suzhou. After graduation, she was admitted to the Suzhou Pingtan Troupe, performed all over the country, and participated in large-scale CCTV festival performances many times. P.S. Pingtan is a unique performing tradition that originated over 400 years ago in Southeastern China, and involves stringed instruments, singing, and humorous storytelling as a duet. Yuan Ni, an accomplished Erhu soloist, has been dedicated to her musician's life since birth. She earned a BA in Erhu Performance from Wuhan Conservatory of Music.
