The Eastern Music Festival’s opening week for the 2024 season is packed with exhilarating
musical performances featuring our faculty artists, Young Artists, fellows, and distinguished
guest artists: pianist William Wolfram, banjoist Béla Fleck, and saxophonist Carter Doolittle!

This week’s lineup spotlights masterpieces from the Romantic and Classical periods.
The Eastern Chamber Players kick off the first week by celebrating arguably some of the
world’s greatest composers! Our inaugural chamber concert of the season will feature
Beethoven’s sublime Fourth Cello Sonata, performed by Julian Schwarz on cello and Marika Bournaki on piano. Also on the program is Elena Katz-Chernin’s evocative Piano Trio “The
Spirit and the Maiden,” showcasing John Fadial on violin, Beth Vanderborgh on cello, and
Naoko Takao on piano. The evening culminates with Brahms’ majestic Piano Quartet in G
minor, featuring Giora Schmidt on violin, Chauncey Patterson on viola, Allan Steele on cello,
and Santiago Rodriguez on piano. Join us for this musical journey at 8:00 PM on Tuesday, June 25th in Dana Auditorium.

Our first Signature Performance, William Wolfram in Recital, is dedicated to the prodigious
talent of EMF’s very own William Wolfram! This recital will feature Liszt’s monumental Piano
Sonata in B minor and Schumann’s passionate Fantasie in C. Don’t miss this exceptional
event at 8:00 PM on Wednesday, June 26th in Dana Auditorium.

Delve deeper into the music with our Musically Speaking programs, exploring the background
behind Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evening’s compositions and composers. Join musicologist
Dr. Greg Carroll and EMF special guests at 7:00 PM on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays
starting June 27th in the Moon Room of Dana Auditorium. These pre-concert talks are free and
open to the public.

Welcome Bach!, I mean back! Our second signature performance of the season is a tribute to the
timeless works of J. S. Bach. Enjoy the masterful interpretations by our EMF Faculty and the
EMF Orchestral Fellows on Thursday, June 27th at 8:00 PM in Dana Auditorium.
Celebrate Dvořák’s America in a pay-what-you-can event, presenting the first opportunity to
hear all the orchestral musicians participating in EMF’s 5-week program. Experience the
transformative power of Dvořák’s music, featuring his 12th String Quartet in F and his
Symphony No. 9 in E minor, “From the New World.” Join us for this performance on Friday,
June 28th at 8:00 PM in Dana Auditorium.

EMF proudly presents Celebrations and Rhapsodies, an evening of works by Zwilich,
Debussy, Gershwin, and Tchaikovsky. This performance marks the beginning of our Saturday
night Joseph M. Bryan Festival Orchestra Series. Enjoy the incredible talents of Béla Fleck on banjo, Carter Doolittle on saxophone, and the Eastern Festival Orchestra on Saturday, June
29th at 8:00 PM in Dana Auditorium.

As varied as these season highlights appear, the EMF Experience each summer is so much more
than the performance. EMF is an unforgettable learning experience for dedicated young artists
from across the nation, an enriching and entertaining social encounter for our patrons, and a
celebration of incredible artistry.
