Soprano Penelope Jensen is one of two featured soloists for Baroque & Beyond’s upcoming concert, “Gulliver & Gusto!”
The performance takes place in the historic chapel at Chapel of the Cross, 304 E. Franklin Street in Chapel Hill. Concert time is 3:00 pm and tickets are available at the door.
Jensen will be featured in Pergolesi’s Orfeo, a baroque cantata of great drama and pathos. Orfeo’s bride, Euridice, has been captured and taken to the underworld. Orfeo alternates between despair and the hope that somehow he can bring her back to earth and their happy life together. The accompanying ensemble is comprised of baroque violins and viola; and a continuo band of baroque cello, violone, and harpsichord.
The other featured soloist is baroque violinist Andrew Bonner. He is joined by fellow violinist Leah Peroutka in a spirited rendition of Telemann’s “Gulliver Suite”, from which the concert title is drawn. This is programmatic music of the late baroque period, giving the instrumentalists an opportunity to showcase their virtuosity.
Also on the program: a trio sonata by J.S. Bach (BWV 529, adapted for strings and continuo from an organ trio sonata); a sonata by Buxtehude for violin, viola da gamba and harpsichord (BuxWV253); and ‘Les délices de la solitude’ by Michel Corrette, for baroque cello and continuo.

The historic chapel at The Chapel of the Cross is a larger venue that accommodates the growing audience of Baroque & Beyond. With 125 seats, padded pews, excellent sight lines, good acoustics, and convenient nearby parking, this location is a wonderful match for period-music concerts. Two locations are recommended for parking: the Planetarium parking lot, adjacent to the church; and the Rosemary Street parking garage, a block north of the church.
