Dear CVNC:
May I respond briefly to one of Mr. Parson’s comments regarding his characterization of “monkeys” at the microphone. We were not just welcoming people to our concert (although we are truly pleased that a good number of folks showed up, despite the weather). We were also reminding folks that their participation in Friends of the Fisk (i.e., donations to offset the costs of these concerts) is essential if we are to continue with this excellent series of concerts and other offerings. I regret any intrusion on the musicality of the evening, but we really need to make this appeal more than once, if we hope to survive to future seasons. Perhaps the Raleigh arts scene does not need to concern itself with donations. Here in Greenville, it is quite another matter.
Most respectfully,
William P. Bivins, Member, East Carolina Musical Arts and Education Foundation Board of Directors
Editor’s Note: Mr. Parsons, originally from Raleigh, is a long-term resident of New Bern.
