Information added on 2/18/16:
Resident Conductor Nate Beversluis will conduct the February 25 and 27 Tanger Outlets Masterworks concerts, featuring an all-Tchaikovsky program and multimedia artwork montage. GSO Music Director, Dmitry Sitkovetsky, is recovering from a minor surgical procedure at home in London and is restricted from international airline travel for the next several weeks. Maestro Sitkovetsky will return to Greensboro in April to conduct the season’s penultimate Masterworks concerts.
As Resident Conductor, Beversluis regularly conducts the Tanger Outlets POPS Series concerts, and helms the GSO’s diverse array of education programs, including the Greensboro Symphony Youth Orchestra. He is also no stranger to the classical stage, having conducted the GSO for the Shostakovich Violin Concerto No. 1 in 2015 and the Beethoven Violin Concerto in 2014, while Maestro Sitkovetsky acted as soloist.
Other elements of the February performances remain the same, including repertoire, logistics and multimedia montage of Aleksander and Lyuba Titovets paintings.

An evening of grandeur awaits this March, featuring some of Tchaikovsky’s greatest music, from his famous 1812 Overture to his Sleeping Beauty Suite. The Greensboro Symphony also presents a fresh take on the composer’s Symphony #1: “Winter Dreams,” pairing the piece with a multimedia montage of the works of internationally renowned Russian artists, Lyuba and Aleksander Titovets.
One of the most beloved composers of the 20th century, Tchaikovsky is perhaps most well-known for the final piece on the GSO’s program: the 1812 Overture, included frequently in 4th of July celebrations and perhaps most famously in the 2006 blockbuster V For Vendetta. Featured on percussion for this performance will be Mr. Charles Calkins, member of the Symphony’s Board of Directors and partner with Kilpatrick Townsend.
Despite his fame as an orchestral composer, Tchaikovsky struggled mightily in composing his Symphony #1. Experiencing panic attacks, insomnia, hallucinations and more in his effort to write a satisfactory piece, the Russian master’s efforts were ultimately rewarded with a successful premiere and glowing critical reception, paving the way for 6 additional symphonies. Sleeping Beauty, on the other hand, was a piece whose success Tchaikovsky never lived to see, dying only three years after its 1890 premiere. Now, the ballet has become one of his most famous and often-performed works.
Augmenting this dynamic musical performance will be the works of Russian artists Aleksander and Lyuba Titovets. In a program designed to closely tie the art and music, a digital montage of the Titovets’s beautiful paintings will be displayed throughout the concert, immersing audiences even more intimately in a wintery world of Russian art.
