The Greensboro Symphony’s 2016-2017 Tanger Outlets Masterworks Series debuts this month with an unprecedented collaboration! Bringing together two orchestras, two conductors and one world-renowned violinist, Greensboro will experience a powerful performance in War & Peace Reimagined. The concert will feature Prokofiev’s celebrated Violin Concerto No. 1 with Maestro Dmitry Sitkovetsky on violin and Dr. Kevin Geraldi conducting the UNCG Symphony Orchestra, followed by the mammoth Shostakovich Symphony No. 8 with the full Greensboro Symphony!
Both reflections on the World Wars and their aftermath, the Russian repertoire is part of UNCG’s year-long interdisciplinary examination of War and Peace Imagined. This collaborative project will bring together UNCG departments across the campus and community organizations throughout the city, including the Symphony, Triad Stage and more, to reflect on conflict produced during times of war and peace and the possibilities that they create. The Prokofiev concerto in particular marks a unique collaboration as Maestro Dmitry Sitkovetsky joins forces with Dr. Kevin Geraldi and the UNCG Symphony for one of the violin repertoire’s most challenging pieces.
In addition, the GSO presents the opening concert of its Rice Toyota Sitkovetsky & Friends Series on Friday, September 30th, which is dedicated to the memory of Tobee Wynne Kaplan. Tobee was a steadfast friend of the Greensboro Symphony, a longtime donor and subscriber, and a bedrock of Greensboro’s arts community. As such, the GSO plans to honor her with an intimate performance featuring Dmitry Sitkovetsky and Inara Zandmane playing the Handel Violin Sonata No. 4, plus Beethoven’s “Archduke” Piano Trio. The former in particular holds a special place in Dmitry’s heart, as it is one of the pieces that crowned him the youngest-ever first prize winner of the Prague Concertino Competition for Young Musicians in September, 1966 — exactly 50 years ago this month!
