UNC Charlotte College of Arts + Architecture: Deep Water: The Murder Ballads

( Fri., May. 31, 2013 )

Knight Theater, 430 South Tryon Street, Charlotte, NC 28202

Program

True tales of seduction and revenge come to life in three dance theater pieces by choreographer E.E. Balcos and composer John Allemeier. These contemporary works are inspired by 19th-century murder ballads, narrative songs from North Carolina that chronicle the disastrous consequences of love gone wrong. Victims or villains? Randolph County’s Omie Wise, Forsyth County’s Ellen Smith, and Burke County’s Frankie Silver have become legends.

Past meets present when North Carolina  traditional musician Riley Baugus performs the original ballads as preludes to their wordless adaptations in new music and dance.

Cost
