Program

Ralph Vaughan Williams' Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis was composed specifically for the Gloucester Cathedral and its imposing vaulted ceilings. The ensemble is purposefully split into three and located in opposing ends of the performance space  to create an effect of unending sound. While St. Stephen's Episcopal Church was built nearly a millennium later, its stained glass windows and high ceilings create similarly remarkable experience.

A reworking of an 18th century sacred work by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, Lera Auerbach's Sogno di Stabat Mater is a dialogue across time. Scored for violin, viola, vibraphone, and string orchestra, this eccentric work was written in 2010 for violinist Gideon Kremer and his Kremerata Baltica.

Verklaerte nacht (Transfigured night) is Arnold Schoenberg's setting of a poem by Richard Dehmel, in which a devastating secret is revealed as two lovers walk though a dark forest on a moonlit night. This dense score, considered to be the composer's farewell to the luscious sonorities of the romantic era, is an unparalleled sequence of tension and release.
