After 15 months of witnessing the battle over what constitutes the TRUTH vs a FACT play out on our screens and in our national conversations, The Lifespan Of A Fact allows us the chance to laugh, and to breathe, while framing the larger debate into one seemingly simple argument. The play was written by Jeremy Kareken, David Murrell and Gordon Farrell. Based on the book by John D’Agata and Jim Fingal, and produced by arrangement with Dramatists Play Service.
Starring Randy Davis, Matt Carter and Eleanor Stafford, and directed by Steve Vernon, the play follows Jim Fingel (Carter), a fresh-faced fact checker assigned by editor Emily Primrose (Stafford) to fact check John D’Agata’s (Davis) transcendent essay about the suicide of a teenage boy - an essay that could save the magazine from collapse. The two men come head to head in a comedic yet gripping battle over facts versus truth. As Emily has to decide if the essay can be published in time to meet a looming deadline, she (and the audience) are forced to decide if literary beauty and personal truths are as vital to the story as cold, hard facts.
