Performed by Gail Ann Schroeder, viola da gamba; Barbara Weiss, harpsichord; Suzanne Rousso, baroque viola; Stephanie Vial, baroque cello
Saint Giles Chapel at Deerfield, 1617 Hendersonville Road, Asheville, NC 28803
The ensemble features period instruments played by Gail Ann Schroeder on viola da gamba, and Barbara Weiss on harpsichord, in collaboration with Mallarmé Chamber Players Suzanne Rousso on baroque viola, and Stephanie Vial on baroque cello. The concert features works by Purcell, Flackton, Abel, Caporale, and Lidl, all of whom once resided in London. The style galant movement featured a return to simplicity which emphasized light elegance in contrast to the grandiosity and complexity of the late Baroque Era. The music had immediate appeal with audiences and emphasized more song-like melodies and a clearer distinction between soloist and accompaniment.
