Charlotte Bach Festival: Closing Concert: Monteverdi’s Vespers of 1610

June 22 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm

$15 – $60

In 1601, Claudio Monteverdi assumed musical leadership of the ducal chapel in Mantua, having been employed as a musician in the court of Vincenzo Gonzaga for many years. The responsibility to prove the Gonzaga’s power and prestige through the ducal chapel’s liturgical and musical splendor seemed to have a commensurate effect on Monteverdi as well. With a Venetian publisher and an ever-expanding portfolio of compositions and successes, Monteverdi traveled to Rome in 1610, and successfully gained permission to dedicate his new volume of Vespers music to Pope Paul V. Monteverdi’s innovations helped to revolutionize musical composition.
