Greensboro, NC – Eastern Music Festival (EMF) and Guilford College welcome brilliant young string players Caroline Goulding, violin, and Julian Schwarz, cello, as part of the Lincoln Financial Festival Orchestra Series on Saturday, July 30, 2011 at 8:00pm at Dana Auditorium, Guilford College.
Repertoire for the evening includes: Vivian Fung: Dust Devils (An EMF World Premiere); Brahms: Concerto for Violin and Violoncello in A minor, op.102; Bartók: Suite from The Miraculous Mandarin, op.19; Stravinsky: The Firebird: Suite.
Still in her teens, violinist Caroline Goulding has already appeared as soloist with many orchestras nationwide, including a recent performance with the Charlotte Symphony. Along with her performances both as orchestral soloist and in recital, Caroline has appeared on many national talk shows. Recently, Caroline was featured on Maestro Erich Kunzel’s last recording From the Top at the Pops.
After winning the coveted first prize of the Aspen Music Festival’s Concerto Competition, at age 13, Alan Fletcher, President and CEO of the Aspen Music Festival and School said of Caroline, “Here was freshness, confidence, radiant technique and perfect optimism wrapped in sparkling beauty.” Caroline was later to be awarded first prize in the 2009-2010 Young Concert Artists International Audition held in New York and is currently the youngest artist on their roster.
Born in Seattle into a musical family, twenty year old cellist Julian Schwarz is already being recognized as a young musician with great talent and even greater potential.
Mr. Schwarz made his orchestral debut at the age of 11 playing the Saint-Saens Concerto No. 1 with the Seattle Symphony with his father, Gerard Schwarz, on the podium. Since then he has appeared as soloist with many of the Seattle area orchestras and in the winter of 2010 he was one of the featured soloists on an extensive US tour with the Moscow State Radio Symphony Orchestra, performing 13 concerts on the East and West coasts.
A past performer at EMF, Julian Schwarz has also performed as a chamber musician at the Aspen, Interlochen, California Summer and Encore music festivals. In summer 2009 he was the “Featured Young Artist” at both the Seattle Chamber Music Festival and the Cape Cod Music Festival and attended and performed at the prestigious Verbier Festival in Switzerland.
Mr. Schwarz was recently profiled in a cover story of Teen Strings and has been featured on the acclaimed NPR radio program “From the Top.” He has also recorded “In Memoriam” by Gerard Schwarz for the Music of Remembrance series on the Naxos label.
Julian Schwarz started piano lessons at the age of five and began his cello studies the following year with the late David Tonkonogui; subsequent teachers have included Toby Saks and Lynn Harrell. He attends The Juilliard School in New York City where he studies with Joel Krosnick.
