Duke Performances will host iconic and influential musician, composer, choreographer, and theater-maker Meredith Monk for a two-week artist in residency engagement from Monday, October 22, through Saturday, November 3.  In addition to numerous free and open to the public events, Monk’s visit will culminate in a performance of her evening-length work Education of the Girlchild Revisited on Friday and Saturday, November 2 and 3, at 8 pm in Reynolds Theater.

MacArthur Fellow and this year one of the first Doris Duke Artist Award recipients, Meredith Monk has been at the leading edge of interdisciplinary performance since the 1960s.  Monk was already an acclaimed singer when she began to explore the concept of extended vocal technique, pushing the boundaries of classical voice. As she developed extended vocal techniques, she also began mixing disciplines to create performances that fulfilled her interior vision, combing dance, theater, film, music, and visual art into work that has continued to inspire across generations.

Monk’s interdisciplinary work forms the basis for her 12 day residency at Duke Performances. While in residence Monk will be engaged in a variety of activities with Duke students and members of the Durham community, including class visits, master classes, lectures, and discussions.  Full residency schedule below.

Also while at Duke, Monk will spend time with her ensemble and artistic collaborator developing a new piece, On Behalf of Nature, a new music theatre work that examines the human realm in relation to the multitude of realms within the natural world. On Behalf of Nature is set to premiere in January of 2013 at UCLA’s Center for the Art of Performance.

In addition to other events, Monk will offer Archaeology of an Artist on Thursday, October 25, at 7 pm at the Nasher Museum of Art; this event is free and open to the public. Archaeology of an Artist is an in-depth exploration of Monk’s 50 year career. The presentation matches Monks discussion of her own work with video clips and live performances which illustrate the presentation.

Monk’s residence culminates in two performances of Education of the Girlchild Revisited on Friday and Saturday, November 2 and 3, at 8 pm in Reynolds Theater. Education of the Girlchild Revisited offers a solo piece from Monk’s acclaimed 1972 Education of the Girlchild composition in the first half, followed by Shards, which features the full ensemble recasting fragments of pieces developed at the same time as the original Girlchild.
