About the composers and performer
Gavin Bryars is an English composer of jazz and experimental music. It Never Rains (2010) was commissioned by Jim Fox for the California label Cold Blue Music.
Alex Burtzos is is an American composer and conductor living in New York City. His compelling and diverse works have been performed across the United States and in Europe. Since 2012, he has been commissioned by / collaborated with JACK Quartet, the Manhattan Sax Quartet, Marcel Trio, ShoutHouse, Diaspora Duo, Fresh Squeezed Opera, Tempus Continuum Ensemble, the Aspen Music Festival, The Secret Opera, ensemble mise-en, and many others. He is the conductor of ShoutHouse, a hip-hop/classical fusion orchestra. Currently a doctoral fellow at Manhattan School of Music, Alex served on the Faculty of the Florentine School in Lower Manhattan from 2011-14. Since 2014, he has taught full-time at Manhattan School of Music. Alex also teaches composition at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ.
David Kirkland Garner earned his Ph.D. in composition at Duke in 2014. He has recently been appointed Assistant Professor of Composition at the University of South Carolina School of Music. In March, Mallarme Chamber Players premiered his new work for violin and piano, “The Sky Was Good for Flying,” performed by Nicholas DiEugenio and Mimi Solomon. The work was commissioned by DiEugenio and Solomon, who will perform it in additional concerts in New York and North Carolina.
Sid Richardson and Ken Stewart are both graduate composers at Duke. Sid Richardson directs, [dnme] Duke New Music Ensemble. The Dogma Loops, presented on this program, is Ken Stewart’s dissertation thesis for his Ph.D. in Composition.
Violinist Lilit Hartunian performs at the forefront of contemporary music innovation in Boston and internationally. She is regularly heard on stage premiering works written for her by leading composers, and has appeared as soloist in the SEAMUS, NYCEMF, Open Sound, and Third Practice festivals. Ms. Hartunian is the Creative Director of the Museum of Fine Arts’ ensemble-in-residence, Vellumsound; in that role, she conceives and performs chamber music programs celebrating the many rich intersections between visual art and music. She can also be heard performing with such contemporary ensembles as Boston Modern Orchestra Project, Sound Icon, Callithumpian Consort, Guerilla Opera, Equilibrium Ensemble, and others. Her local performances have garnered critical acclaim, and internationally she was one of twelve violinist from the United States chosen to attend the Lucerne Festival Academy under the direction of Pierre Boulez. In addition to her performance career, Lilit Hartunian serves on the violin and chamber music faculty at The Rivers School Conservatory.
