Chamber Music Wilmington kicks off its 18th season on Sunday, September 30, 2012 at 7:30 PM at Beckwith Recital Hall, UNCW Cultural Arts Building. This season’s program, as always, showcases wonderful music played by an international cast of outstanding artists and ensembles. The theme for this season’s concerts is “MUSIC AMONG FRIENDS”. The September 30th concert in Beckwith Hall UNCW is “Celebrating Bach”. It willl feature Nicholas Duchamp, flutist with the French National Opera; our own Barbara McKenzie, piano; Adela Pena, violin (a founding member of the Eroica Trio); Nancy King, soprano; and others. Bach’s music is known for its beauty, variety and profundity; clearly one of the high water marks of Western cultural musical expression. This extraordinary concert will feature Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 5, his D minor Piano Concerto, and the Trio Aria from Cantata No. 100.
The October 21st concert, held in Beckwith Hall UNCW, presents a sparkling foursome, the Cavani String Quartet. They are the Cleveland Institute of Music’s Quartet in Residence. The Cavani Quartet is the winner of the Guarneri and Naumberg prizes. They are famous for their dynamic, irresistible presence on stage, and are heard regularly on American TV and in major series and festivals throughout North America and Europe. They will perform music by Schumann, Turina, and Bartok.
On December 2nd the program, “Viva Vivaldi”, will be a collaboration of CMW and the Historical Society of the Lower Cape Fear held in St. Paul’s Episcopal Church at 16th and Market. It is the perfect closing event for Wilmington’s annual Candlelight Tour. The Vivaldi Project Ensemble will play a program of Handel, Pachelbel, Corelli, Torelli and Vivaldi on period instruments. The ensemble has been lauded for the vitality of their playing – a perfect complement to the holiday season.
January 27th we return to Beckwith Hall UNCW for a concert by the Ventus Wind Quintet. The Ventus will take us into the captivating world of French wind music with a concert of light-hearted, humor-filled, full-throttle virtuoso antics for flute, clarinet, oboe, horn and bassoon. Music performed will include pieces by Debussy, Poulenc, Ibert and others.
Additional Concerts
Although not part of the regular four concert season, On December 1st there will be a special “Celtic Christmas” concert at the Community Arts Center. Jennifer Licko, with her “Fire in the Kitchen” Band, is known for her stunning vocal range and a voice that hypnotizes with sensitivity and warmth. She plays the piano, the guitar, the accordion and the Irish drum and had long been a North Carolina favorite, before she took her career to the national scene. She’ll be joined by Bobby O’Donovan from Cork City, IR and Bob Noble from Leicester.
On April 21st CMW is proud to present the first North Carolina performance of Aaron Diehl, recent winner of the prestigious Cole Porter Prize, at Kenan Auditorium UNCW. Jazz lovers should circle this date on their calendars. This is a chance to hear the very best of American Jazz without having to travel to New York or San Francisco! Mr. Diehl has performed with the Wynton Marsalis Septet, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Diehl will be joined by long time trio partners David Wong, bass, and Quincy Davis, drums. The concert will support the UNCW Jazz Studies Scholarship Fund.
All in all, this season CMW promises a varied, beautiful and moving musical feast with a twist of something added. Wine and refreshments will be served at concerts with the chance to meet the performers. There will be nothing else like this in our area in 2012-13! The CMW is proud to be able to continue to provide great music for our community, now in our 18th year. This is not possible without community support.
