Voices of a New Renaissance, the Triangle’s dynamic chamber choir, will perform an all-Baroque program on the St. Stephen’s Concert Series on Sunday, September 14. This one-time-only performance is at 4:00 p.m. at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Durham. The program, titled Baroque Bookends, celebrates two of the master composers of the Baroque era: Claudio Monteverdi, an early champion of the “new style,” and J. S. Bach, who took Baroque technique to its greatest heights late in the period.

Now in its second full season and directed by Dr. Nathan Leaf, Voices of a New Renaissance (VOANR) draws together 12 experienced choral singers from across the Triangle. The ensemble has been hailed by CVNC as “a group of highly trained singers with a wide range of stylistic and emotional talents.” The goal of VOANR is to engage listeners and bring new audiences to choral music by presenting vocal music of the highest quality in an exciting, approachable format.

Baroque Bookends includes a mass, madrigals and motets by Monteverdi (1567-1643) and Bach (1685-1750), featuring full choir and soloists. The choir will be joined by Jennifer Streeter on harpsichord and organ, and baroque cellist Stephanie Vial. The selections from Monteverdi — drawn from his crowning achievements, the two major collections of his later years — are his Mass for 4 voices, and three extended madrigals, including the heart-rending Lamento della Ninfa, to highlight VOANR’s singers and continuo players. From Bach’s prolific output, the program will feature two motets: the beloved and monumental Jesu meine Freude BWV 227, and the sparkling Lobet den Herrn BWV 230, whose closing “Alleluia” section with its exciting and daring cascade of overlapping lines shows Bach at his best.
