The holidays, for so many, have become a hectic time with little opportunity to reflect on the magic of the season. An evening of music though, can prove restorative for body and spirit. For the last forty nine years, the Raleigh Boychoir has presented its Carols of Christmas program. A highlight of Raleigh’s busy holiday arts performance calendar, Carols of Christmas will instill the holiday spirit in even the most cynical of patrons.
Christmas music has the unique ability to evoke a powerful and vibrant myriad of emotions and memories. Because the traditional Christmas repertoire is plentiful, it would be easy to craft a program for the evening featuring only the familiar and traditional. It wouldn’t be a Boychoir Christmas, for example, without the beautiful and quintessential Once in Royal David’s City. The program will feature a number of similar traditional carols, arranged for the boychoir soprano voices. Edenton Street United Methodist Church boasts one of the most acoustically rich music venues in the Triangle, and the Boychoir’s sopranos will soar in the church’s sanctuary. Artistic Director, Jeremy Tucker though is transforming what a Boychoir is in the 21st century. In that vein, Carols of Christmas will also feature music that might not be familiar to the audience, but will nevertheless be relevant and inspirational. By expanding membership to include teen members with changed voices, the Boychoir now is able to tap into the leadership of these young men and their deeper voices complement and provide depth to the traditional treble voices. In fact, it is through the Boychoir’s extended range of voices that it make it possible to create a fulfilling night that reacquaints the audience with the magic of the season and the depth and breadth of the emotion and memory that Christmas music is known for. Join the Boychoir for Carols of Christmas and emerge with the holiday spirit rekindled.
