Handel, Part 2: Extant Operas

Presented in Honor of Jack Lane, Lifelong Handelian

November 26, 2020 - Raleigh, NC:

Coping with crisisIn the first part of our study of Handel's major vocal works, we addressed the oratorios. Now we turn to the operas, of which there are even more, not counting the lost ones. We tabluate all of them here..., yes, all of them. And all but a handful are available for free on YouTube, with scores at IMSLP. We have provided all the links we can. We encourage you to take advantage of the oppotunity to hear all of these magnificent works, perhaps even in the order of composition, and maybe even for the first time (if we calculate this correctly) since their sequential presentation in London by Handel himself. Surviving members of The Handel and Haydn Society in Newport News (see part one of this pair) may surely consider this the fulfillment of several whole lifetimes of fascination and amzaement at the sublime artistry of these masterworks. Enjoy.

Extant Handel Operas (based on the list at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_operas_by_George_Frideric_Handel). For synopses/libretti beyond those called out below, see http://www.haendel.it/ (offline as of 11/26/20 but this is/was a reliable source of Handel libretti, so we hope this site will soon return to life…).

Handel Cleanup - A (Long) Footnote for the Articles

(This project reminds me of a favorite children's book from long ago, before political correctness eased it into the dustbin of history, if not the dustbin of my memory. It's a project without end.)

We're addressed the oratorios (HWV 46-48 and 50-71 plus a few supplemental pieces) and the operas (HWV 1-42 plus a few…). HWV 49 is a masque and/or a serenata although it sounds a lot like an oratorio to me.

But coming just after the operas in the catalog are some sets of incidental music, tabulated here:

HWV 43 The Alchemist 14 January 1710 Queen's Theatre, London Instrumental music for the revival of Ben Jonson's play The Alchemist. An arrangement, by an anonymous composer, of music from Handel's opera Rodrigo. A suite: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VPVwhTnqPt4; the score: https://imslp.org/wiki/The_Alchemist%2C_HWV_43_(Handel%2C_George_Frideric)

HWV 44 Comus 1745 Ludlow Castle, Shropshire Three songs and a trio written as part of a private arrangement of John Milton's masque Comus. Excerpts begins at 57:05 in this cut: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CTR44S_YCYI

HWV 45 Alceste Not performed A masque which was written for an unproduced play by Tobias Smollett. Music composed between December 1749 and January 1750. The music is the first 57 minutes of this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CTR44S_YCYI, Score: https://imslp.org/wiki/Alceste%2C_HWV_45_(Handel%2C_George_Frideric)

PLUS a stray song included among the incidental music: HWV 218 "Love's but the frailty of the mind" 17 March 1740 Drury Lane Theatre, London "Sung by Mrs. Kitty Clive at her benefit performance of William Congreve's The Way of the World (Act III). Music composed in London, 1740. Music: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vt6joUlrGO8.

And then there are these odes and masques,

Acis and Galatea, existing as HWV 49a (masque) probably 1718 Cannons, near London, & HWV 49b (serenata) 10 June 1732 King's Theatre, London (text at Stanford). Video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NVMMd3JpTlY; score https://imslp.org/wiki/Acis_and_Galatea%2C_HWV_49_(Handel%2C_George_Frideric)

I guess we could go on, but let's call it a day, shall we?
