The Duke University Department of Music and the Ciompi Quartet are pleased to announce the Ciompi Quartet Presents 2019 Summer Chamber Music Series, marking its eight season at Duke Gardens. Ciompi Quartet Presents is a musical series featuring performances by Ciompi musicians and guest artists known for excellence in artistry and musicality.

This summer the series celebrates its eighth season at Duke Gardens! These special summer performances continue to offer musical eloquence at the Gardens and in one of the most enchanting settings found there, Kirby Horton Hall. This year the series will open with a presentation by Ciompi Quartet cellist Caroline Stinson, who will be joined by the innovative group, Duo Jalal; Jonathan Bagg will present a newly commissioned multi-media work synchronized to live music, and Eric Pritchard and James Tocco will perform a recital featuring three sonata works by master composers.

Join Ciompi Quartet Presents 2019 for another summer at Duke Gardens and enjoy some of the finest chamber music series in our community.

Subscriptions are $60. Purchase subscription tickets beginning May 14. Single tickets are $25 General Public; $20 Non-Duke Students/Duke Employees; $10 Youth/Duke students. Purchase single tickets beginning May 27. Tickets may be purchased online at tickets.duke.edu or at the Duke University Box Office, Bryan Center, Upper Level. An enchantment of music and poetry that spans four centuries, for violin, viola, cello, frame drums and narrator. With music from the Middle Ages and Bach, through the Romantic Era to Krakauer, Waggoner and Improvisation. Jonathan Bagg (viola) with colleagues Laura Gilbert (flute), Gabriela Diaz (violin), Robert Burkhart (cello) and Molly Morkoski (piano) offer a brand new mixed-media piece by composer Eric Moe and visual artist Barbara Weissberger. Designed as a succession of video tableaux that are synchronized with the performance, this new commission will be complemented by Faure’s Piano Quartet, Op. 45, and Mario Davidovsky’s Quartetto for flute and strings.

ABOUT THE CIOMPI QUARTET

The Ciompi Quartet was founded at Duke University in 1965 by the renowned Italian violinist Giorgio Ciompi. All its members are professors at Duke and play a leading role in the cultural life of the university and community, in addition to traveling widely throughout the year for performances.
