Donizetti Wrote More Operas than Rossini and Verdi Combined, so Why Is He the Rodney Dangerfield of Composers?

October 5, 2020 - Raleigh, NC:

Coping with crisisPoor Gaetano Donizetti (1797- 1848), composer of nearly 70 operas! He gets no respect. Well, not enough, anyway. Sure, there's Pasquale – and Lucia and Favorite (or, if you prefer, Favorita), too. And there are those queens – Anna Bolena and Maria Stuarda – plus Elizabeth's boyfriend Roberto Devereux. Then there's Elisir, about that snake-oil salesman. And Fille du régiment, with all those high Cs and the "Salut å la France," too. Lo! That makes eight worth remembering. Eight out of nearly 70.

Or maybe I have been too hard on him? From early childhood I recall some truly fabulous recordings in the family collection – the first complete Lucia, from 1929, with Mercedes Capsir; a 1932 Pasquale that sparkles from start to finish, with a cast that includes Gigli rival Tito Schipa; and then, from my teenage years, the 1960 live Poliuto with Maria Callas and Franco Corelli, linked below. Hear any of these, and the Dangerfield allusion fades quickly.

So let us form our own Donizetti Appreciation Society, following in the footsteps of London's Opera Rara, which has done more work for the composer than any other opera company or any record/CD producer since the late Edward J. Smith, whose privately-issued discs (some of which sounded as if they'd actually been recorded underground) first hinted at the composer's copious and felicitous delights, beyond the smallish popular canon, starting back in 1956. (The famous story about Eddie – that when they closed the old Met and invited all the broadcasters and recording companies to retrieve their microphones, one – presumably his – went unclaimed – is perhaps apocryphal. But you get the point about his high-class piracy.)

Two of the operas are incomplete, and one is lost. But the sum total is nonetheless impressive – there are more here from the pen of one person than all of, say, Verdi's and Rossini's, combined. And that's no laughing matter.

The format's similar to what we've used before – title with embed, type of work, number of acts, completion or premiere date, premiere location, recommended YouTube link. In closing, you will see that there are far fewer videos and many more audio recordings here than in our other compilations, which just goes to underscore the notion that Donizetti don't get no respect – or not enough, anyway.

Enjoy.
