October 30, 2019 - Raleigh, NC:

This preview has been provided by the Triangle Brass Band.

In the world of the performing arts, many orchestras, choirs, ballets and theatrical or opera group claim to be "the best," but this declaration is rather subjective. How do you define "best?" Popular following? Ticket sales? Positive critical reviews? In the world of brass banding, it is fairly straightforward, as these kinds of ensembles regularly compete in brass band contests. By this standard, there is one and only one "best" and that is the Cory Band, from Treorchy, Wales, Great Britain. They are the current British National Champions, European Champions, Brass in Concert Champions and are back-to-back winners of the British Open Championship in 2018 and 2019. As their web page promises, they are "world class in brass."

Led by their charismatic Music Director, Philip Harper, the group made a North American tour three years ago and played to sold-out houses in six cities. They are returning to Raleigh, to perform in Meymandi Concert Hall, in the Duke Energy Center, on Wednesday, October 30th, one of only four stops on this year's tour. The program includes many traditional classical works, such as Light Cavalry Overture (von Suppe), and "Love Theme" from Romeo and Juliet (Tchaikovsky), as well as selections which showcase Cory's amazing collection of soloists, including The Paragon, featuring cornet soloist Tom Hutchinson, and "Somewhere" from West Side Story, which features trombonist Chris Thomas. Want to hear something that will knock your socks off? The concert begins at 7:00 pm!
