This preview has been provided by Music for A Great Space.

Music for a Great Space (MGS) will feature Trio Valtorna on a program benefitting Shepherd's Center of Greensboro. Bringing together the gifts of three internationally recognized artists, Trio Valtorna formed in 2011. After performing together at "Music from Angel Fire" Chamber Music Festival, renowned violinist Ida Kavafian and French horn player extraordinaire David Jolley decided to continue in collaboration, adding the young pianist Gilles Vonsattel to complete the ensemble. Fred Kirshnit, writing in the New York Sun, called Ms. Kavafian's artistry "meaningful and affecting", while the New Yorker has praised Mr. Jolley's "richly melancholy horn solos", and David Weininger in the Boston Globe observed the "clarity and light touch" of Mr. Vonsattel.

The Trio will perform the Brahms Horn Trio. Although this work was written to commemorate the death of Brahms's mother, Christiane, it draws on a theme which Brahms had composed twelve years previously while he was walking through the woods. This masterwork of the chamber music genre features some of Brahms most impassioned and heartfelt writing. The Trio will also feature a work for the same instrumentation by John Harrison as well as Ravel's 2nd Violin Sonata. For their NC composer, the ensemble will feature Stillness and Velocity by UNCSA professor Lawrence Dillon.

The Music for a Great Cause Concert is an effort by MGS to give back to the community by partnering with another local non-profit organization. MGS chose Shepherd's Center this year because of the important work they do supporting the senior community in Greensboro. Shepherd's Center has been providing services of independent living, education and life enrichment, as well as advocating for older adults since 1987. 50% of all concert proceeds will be donated to Shepherd's Center.

This concert will take place February 1, 7:30 pm at Christ United Methodist Church in Greensboro, NC. Tickets are available at the door and in advance: www.musicforagreatspace.org or (336) 638-7624.
