EMF student concerto competition winners
4th Annual Classical Guitar Summit young guitar artists
This preview has been provided by the Eastern Music Festival.
During the fifth and final week of the 2018 season, EMF culminates with the most collective energy and vibrant music the festival has yet seen. Students have been performing with each other for the entire festival making this final week the most refined days of music making.
The Eastern Chamber Players conclude their final weekly summer series on Monday July 23rd at the UNCG Recital Hall and Tuesday July 24th at Guilford College Dana Auditorium. These performances will feature pianist Kun-Woo Paik, universally regarded as one of the most important pianists of his generation, and Grammy-Award winning guitarist Jason Vieaux, along with several of EMF's acclaimed faculty artists.
The 4th Annual Classical Guitar Summit spotlights EMF's guitar program on Wednesday night at Temple Emanuel featuring EMF's young guitar artists as well as guitar faculty Kami Rowan, Julian Gray and Jason Vieaux. According to National Public Radio, Vieaux is, "one of the most precise and soulful classical guitarist of his generation."
EMF hosts an annual student concerto competition and this year we had 78 participants enter. The five winners selected will perform their winning concerto with the EMF Young Artist Orchestras on Thursday, July 26 at 8pm in Dana Auditorium. This year's winners are:
Ela Kodžas, performing Bruch's Scottish Fantasy, op.46 (mvt.I)
Jonathan Miller performing Bottesini's Double Bass Concerto No. 2 in B minor (mvt. I)
Asher Harris, performing Copland's Clarinet Concerto
Abigail Leidy, performing Lalo's Cello Concerto in D Minor (mvt. I)
Morgan Short, performing Pierné's Concertstück, op.39
Jon McGarry, performing Strauss' Horn Concerto No. 1 in E-flat major, op.11 (mvt.I)
Yihan Sun, performing Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 1 in E minor, op.11 (mvt. III)
EMF will close its 2018 season on July 28 at 8pm with Stravinsky's Firebird Suite (1911). The Firebird Suite was written in the style of Nicola Rimsky-Korsakov. This music showcases virtuosic technical passages in the woodwinds. The piece ends with a mystic melody in the brass symbolizing the phoenix rising from the ashes. This will be an unforgettable culmination truly reminding our EMF family why we keep coming back to the Eastern Music Festival year after year making Greensboro our second home.
Eastern Music Festival welcomed internationally acclaimed soloists, world-class orchestra performers and instructors and 234 young artists from around the globe to Greensboro on June 24 for the Festival's 56th season.
