May 4, 2017 - Greensboro, NC:

World renowned cellist & 2017 Grammy Award winner, Zuill Bailey, returns to the GSO for the final concert of the 2016-2017 season! Broadly considered one of the world's leading cellists, Bailey has become widely sought-after due to his celebrated artistry & technical wizardry. He also won a 2017 Grammy Award for best solo instrumental performance, for his work on "Tales of Hemingway," composed by Michael Daugherty & performed with the Nashville Symphony.

The sixth and final concert of the Tanger Outlets Masterworks Series will feature Bailey on one of Elgar's final works: the Cello Concerto in E minor. Written after the conclusion of WWI, this concerto is an introspective and intimate work, which, combined with Bailey's finely crafted musicianship, will undoubtedly move the audience.

Also featured on the program is the Overture to Tannhäuser by Wagner, and Dvořák's Symphony No.7 in D minor. The latter is one of Dvořák's best-known works, containing dramatic shifts in mood and character, and ranks among the greatest symphonies ever written.

The GSO's Chamber concert on May 5th will feature Dmitry and Zuill alongside GSO principal violist Scott Rawls, performing fifteen of Bach's Sinfonias (arranged for string trio by Dmitry himself!) They will then join forces with other GSO members to perform the Brahms Serenade No.1 in D major for nonet, the original form of the work before Brahms reconfigured it for full orchestra. Make sure not to miss the dramatic conclusion of the GSO 2016-2017 season!
