September 25, 2014 - Greensboro, NC:

This preview has been provided by the Greensboro Symphony.

The Greensboro Symphony Breaks Bad in its 56th season, opening with a bang in this youthful spin on Masterworks and the biggest Chamber concert in series history! This Masterworks season, Dmitry Sitkovetsky and the GSO will explore themes of musical chemistry in association with AMC’s Emmy award winning TV show, Breaking Bad. Concerts will explore: how Walter White’s archetypal devolution from hero to villain parallels the tales of Britten’s Peter Grimes & Beethoven’s “Eroica” Symphony; the radical transformation of classics like Pictures at an Exhibition over a short period of time; how the mixture of different elements in a chemical (or musical) reaction dramatically alters the final product; and much more!

The first performance of the Masterworks series is appropriately entitled Family Comes First, as Dmitry is joined onstage by his daughter, Julia Sitkovetsky. If we know one thing from Breaking Bad, it is that Walter White will go to any length necessary to protect family. In this performance, dramatic pieces from Rossini, Verdi, Donizetti and Mahler will take the audience through the mind of Heisenberg and his struggle to keep his family safe while still providing for them. Performances take place on Thursday the 25th and Saturday the 27th of September at Dana Auditorium. In this case, family truly does come first—and the Sitkovetsky family is one to be reckoned with!

Additionally, on Sunday, September 28th, the GSO will celebrate Dmitry Sitkovetsky’s 60th Birthday Extravaganza! This incredible concert will feature Dmitry and eight of the Symphony’s finest guest artists from seasons past, here to honor and celebrate Dmitry’s birthday. Guests will include: Bella Davidovich, Mayuko Kamio, Sergey Antonov, Stefani Collins, and more, plus GSO musicians. Repertoire will span the centuries, from Bach, Mozart and Haydn to Brahms, Ravel and Shostakovich…and will also include a world-premiere work by local composer Mark Engebretson written specifically for Dmitry, Julia and string quintet. This will be an evening of music unlike anything you have ever seen…and a start to the season that you won’t want to miss!
