On Sunday, September 24th, Dr. Al Sturgis, Artistic Director of the North Carolina Master Chorale, was presented with the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, at NCMC's annual Singer and Board Social.
The Order of the Long Leaf Pine is among the most prestigious awards presented by the Governor of North Carolina. The Order of the Long Leaf Pine is presented to individuals who have a proven record of extraordinary service to the state. Contributions to their communities, exceptional accomplishments, and many years of service to their organizations are some of the guidelines by which recipients are selected for this award.
Sturgis recently celebrated his 30th season with the North Carolina Master Chorale, his 25th season with the Carolina Ballet, and his 20th season with the Tar River Orchestra.
He has positively impacted thousands of people and the musical arts in North Carolina for many years. Five prominent leaders in the arts wrote moving recommendations to help nominate Sturgis for this prestigious award. Here are a few quotes:
"Without Al's dedication of time and service and passion for his life's work, it is hard to imagine the great success of North Carolina's performing arts, especially in the Triangle." - Carolina Ballet
"Dr. Sturgis is a consummate professional. He is a gifted musician, conductor, vocalist and a dynamic leader. He achieves at a very high level, and through his knowledge, humor and connection to people, others achieve as well." - NC Symphony
"Dr. Sturgis is well loved in the musical world. He is an outstanding musician and gifted conductor. His skill and warm personality create an environment that musicians want to be a part of.." - Tar River Orchestra
"He is deeply respected by his colleagues who consider him to be a valuable resource and respected mentor. Our state is better for his dedication, collaboration, and musical gifts." - NC State
The arts in North Carolina would not be the same without Dr. Sturgis' long-lasting guidance, passion, and hard work.
