June 25, 2022 - Greensboro, NC:

This preview has been provided by Eastern Music Festival.

Eastern Music Festival’s first week of the 2022 season is full of performances by our faculty artists, fellows, and special guest, virtuoso violinist Lara St. John! Highlighted composers encompass classics from the Baroque and Classical Periods, along with pieces by American composers.

Eastern Chamber Players featuring EMF Faculty Artists will begin our first week of inspired music making this summer! Our first chamber concert will highlight brimming lovely tunes written by Mozart, Britten’s composition written for legendary oboist Leon Gooseens with EMFs Karen Blundell as the soloist, and the breathtaking journey of musical ideas by Brahms. The evening of invigorating chamber music will be on Tuesday, June 28th at 8PM in Dana Auditorium.

William Wolfram will kick off our Signature Performances by performing works by virtuoso composers of the Romantic period on Wednesday, June 29th at 8PM. The performance will spotlight Franz Liszt, a composer Wolfram is highly sought after to perform. Works by Robert Schumann and Frédéric Chopin are also included on the program.

Bach to Bach, our first large ensemble performance with EMF faculty and fellows, will showcase a night of Johann Sebastian Bach’s best works on Thursday, June 30th at 8PM. The evening will consist of Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 3, 4, and 5, Concerto for Two Violins in D major, and Concerto for Violin and Oboe in C minor.

Leading our first Guest Masterclass this year will be “high-powered soloist” Lara St. John on Friday, July 1st at 4PM. The class will take place in the Carnegie Room, Hege Library at Guilford College, and all are invited to attend.

EMF Orchestral Celebration returns this year as a Pay What You Can concert on Friday, July 1st at 8PM. The performance will feature Symphony No. 7 in A major, op.92 by Beethoven, and Symphony No. 1 in C minor, op.68 by Brahms, conducted by our internationally recognized and highly esteemed music director Gerard Schwarz.

All American Celebration, the first concert with the Eastern Festival Orchestra on Saturday, July 2 at 8pm, will feature a program that will be sure to uplift your patriotic spirit. The evening features a few of America’s greatest composers: George Gershwin, Samuel Barber, and Howard Hanson. The soloist for Barber’s famous piece, Violin Concerto, op.14, is renowned Canadian virtuoso Lara St. John.

All Young Artists Recitals are free and open to the public, located in the Carnegie Room at Guilford College. Young Artists Chamber Recitals take place on Tuesday July 26th at 1:30PM and 6:15PM; Wednesday July 13th and July 20th at 4PM; Wednesday July 20th and July 27th at 6:30PM; Saturday July 30th at 2PM. Young Artists Piano Recitals are on Saturday July 17th and July 24th at 3PM.

To explore the background behind Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evening’s compositions and composers, join musicologists, Dr. Greg Carroll and Maestro (and CVNC writer) Peter Perret for our Musically Speaking program at 7PM. All pre-concert talks are free and open to the public.

Eastern Music Festival continues to follow the guidance provided by the NC Department of Health, Guilford County Department of Public Health, and Guilford College. At this present time, for all Eastern Music Festival related activities, masks are “highly recommended” indoors and in large groups but not “required.”

As varied as these season highlights appear, the EMF Experience each summer is so much more than the performance. EMF is an unforgettable learning experience for dedicated young artists from across the nation, an enriching and entertaining social encounter for our patrons, and a celebration of incredible artistry.
