Preview provided by Eastern Music Festival.

Live classical music is back this summer! Eastern Music Festival’s 60th anniversary season begins June 26, 2021, and continues through July 31, 2021, in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Eastern Music Festival (EMF), Greensboro’s nationally recognized classical music festival and summer educational program, announces the return to live performances this summer. After canceling the in-person 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, EMF is coming home to the Guilford College campus from June 26 through July 31, 2021, Celebrating 60 Years of Musical Excellence. EMF anticipates a safe, socially distanced summer season after months of considered planning for the health and well-being of the students, faculty, staff, and audience members (conducted in accordance with local and national health guidelines as well as recommendations from a team of healthcare advisors and the Guilford County Dept. of Health).

“We are thrilled to be among the first arts organizations in our community to return to live and in-person concerts and educational programs this summer,” says Chris Williams, EMF Executive Director. “We are confident our plans will offer all participants a safe and memorable EMF experience—the kind that can only come from learning and teaching in-person and seeing a live music performance.”
This summer at EMF will look a little different but still sound amazing. The 2021 season will include over 35 performances featuring classical works for ensembles of varying shapes and sizes and a few surprises! The festival will operate at a limited capacity with fewer enrolled young artists, reduced number of faculty artists on the roster, and a 50% reduction of audience seating at concerts and events.
Season highlights include:

  • Tuesdays, June 29, July 6, 13, 20, 27: Chamber Music with the Eastern Chamber Players featuring a variety of classic and contemporary works for chamber ensembles.
  • Wednesdays: Signature Performances featuring EMF Faculty Artists
    • June 30: Pianist Awadagin Pratt in Recital
    • July 7: Violinist Jeff Multer leads EMF Faculty Artists in Vivaldi’s Four Seasons
    • July 14: Greensboro Opera and EMF Present: Summertime and the Livin’ is EASIER!
    • July 21: EMF Percussion Faculty in Recital
    • July 28: The Mile-End Trio (Jeff Multer, violin; Julian Schwarz, cello; Marika Bournaki, piano) performing works by Beethoven and Smetana
  • Thursdays. July 1, 8, 15, 22: Young Artists Showcase
  • Fridays, July 9, 16, 23, 30 : EMF Young Artists Orchestras led by resident conductors Grant Cooper and José-Luis Novo featuring broad and exhilarating classical masterworks by Stravinsky, Dukas, Respighi, Prokofiev, Tchaikovsky, Hindemith, and more.
  • Saturdays, July 3, 10, 17, 24, 31: The Joseph M. Bryan, Jr. Eastern Festival Orchestra Series led by maestro Gerard Schwarz. Featured faculty artists soloists include Jeff Multer, violin (July 3); William Wolfram, piano (July 10); Les Roettges, flute, Randall Ellis, oboe, and Chris Gekker, trumpet (July 17); and Julian Schwarz, cello (July 31).
  • Free Young Artists chamber recitals and piano recitals dates to be announced soon.

Concerts and recitals will be performed in compliance with current local, state, and federal health guidelines, including fewer performers on the stage, social distancing, and wearing face masks. Most performances will be at 8:00 p.m. in Dana Auditorium on the Guilford College campus and limited to 500 socially distanced seats per show, in accordance with current venue capacity restrictions. To note: programs and available seating may change in response to any updated guidelines from the State of North Carolina.

As varied as these season highlights appear, the EMF Experience each summer is so much more than the performance. EMF is an unforgettable learning experience for dedicated young artists from across the nation, an enriching and entertaining social encounter for our patrons, and a celebration of incredible artistry.
